Tutorials - Light Painting & Stencil Light Art

Light Painting Photography (in the dark)

Light Painting started during what is called a
'Long Exposure' in photography. Long exposure means that when you press
the shutter button on a camera (the first click) the shutter which lets the light into the camera
stays open until you are ready to close it (the final click). The length of
time that you want to keep the shutter open varies depending on how much
time you want to spend using lights and other materials to 'Paint' an
image into the long exposure photograph. Painting a light image into a photograph normally requires you to be in a dark room or a dark space or do it in the dark outside in an external environment. Any kind of light can be used from cheap small and large flash lights through to sparklers, burning flames, gas lighters etc. Your Creativity is endless on how you can create a light painting. Ultimately if you want to do this as an artform like anything else you have to practice and experiment to get what you are looking for in a light painting.

And another light painting tips tutorial including safety (by DariusTwin)

Safety/Insurance

Making sure you have the right insurance (if it is needed) is important if you are working on a project or with other people than yourself present. Or if you are working on someone else's property both inside and outside and generally for your own safety if you are the facilitator.

Safety is a must when doing light painting because much of the work involves moving around in the dark.

This is important because you are often working in the dark especially outside in external environments and especially if you are working with flames or fire or gas lit lights.

Respect Nature

If you are doing work outside not only should you do recce's (which means checking the scene out prior to the event) during the day to map out what scene your going to light paint but also to be aware of animals and the flora of the environment to make sure you don't harm or interrupt their lives too much.

Trick/Tips for working in dark environments

Use a dark piece of paper or a lens cap or something similar which can go over the lens to completely darken out any light. When you are doing a light painting and you need to stop and pick up another light or someone else has to move into the scene with their own light or you have to change your materials in the room or change much of the whole set then there is a work around that lets you turn on a light when you need to see more. So during your long exposure when you are ready simply put a cap or a dark cover over the camera lens being careful not to shake the camera. Then you can turn on the lights then do what you want to change in the scene then when you are ready to continue your light painting then you simply turn off the lights again and then take the cap or cover off the lens and continue light painting. A long exposure with the right camera can go for as long as you need to. The trick is to make sure that you cover the lens properly when turning on the lights so that the image is staying dark until you start light painting again. Remember this is one exposure we are talking about.

Light Painting Photography (during the day)

Some artist are doing light painting during the day and they use different techniques to achieve this such as putting strong nd filters (dark filters) on the lenses. Some people actually do light paintings in video mode (which means many frames per second) and not in photography mode (one frame per shot). With either method you may need to find a shady area in which to create the light painting and balance it with the brighter (out of the shade) areas in the shot.

At 5:23 into the video the artist called Kim Henry (dancer/model) and Eric Pare (light painter) do a light painting in the day

Here's a couple of work's which Kim and Eric are well know for: This one combines the light circle and Kim's modelling with the waterfall being frozen by the long exposure to make a magic shot.

Here's also a light painting by Rod Evans made during the day but with a video camcorder which was then processed in the Touch Designer app to get the effect.

HOW DOES iDreamingTV DO IT"S LIGHT PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHY

iDreamingTV like most light painters started out doing this technique during the dark and inside buildings then outside in external environments. We used all sorts of lights and fabrics to achieve our intended and experimental looks. Flashes are also used in light paintings by many light painters/photographers and we use them a lot too.

Long exposure is a profoundly broad photographic technique which can be manipulated endlessly which opens the doors for artist to do highly experimental art.

TIG TAB LIGHT PAINTER & MULTI FACTOR ARTIST & HER PARTNER BLACKLODGE

These are the people that we learnt the most from about stencil light art and just light painting in general and they both inspired iDreamingTV to move into stencil light art. And with Tig Tab being a master of stencil light painting we got unique insights into how she achieved those stencils. Check out her and Blacklodge's amazing stencil and light painting art gallery.

Light Painting with Fibre Optics & Silhouettes

Check out this tutorial by 'Light Painting Paradise' on how to use fibre optic brushes and the beautiful images you can get like making fibre optic rain. You can apply the same principles to your own art.

Light Painting with stop animation

One of Kim Henry and Eric Pare's stop animation light painting experiments:

The Dawn by Janne Parviainen

Beautiful stop animation light painting and visual art combined. Go to Jannne's channel on youtube and check his other stop animation and visual art videos out. They are amazing!

Light Painting with Timelapse Photography:

A South Australian funded art project that includes both timelapse photography combined with light painting animation. The light painting is done with mechanical moving stands to create light orbs during the night timelapse of the outdoor environment including the moving sky.

Freezelight Stop Animation:

Nils Westergard - Wallflower

We are not sure if there was some projection of light art in this beautiful stop animation artwork but we thought we would include it in this list because it is so well done and the combination of music with the stop animation (with some potential light projection included) creates a highly emotive art piece. This kind of art has given us ideas for light painting with stop animation and projection art in the future (even during the day). Also check out Nils youtube channel for his great artwork.
